Hello, Chisato Fukuda Calvert!
We are excited to welcome Chisato Fukuda Calvert to the OpenAQ Team! Chisato is OpenAQ’s new Deputy Director. She will be engaging with our community, finding ways to broaden it, and helping set OpenAQ’s overall strategy to fulfill its mission to fight air inequality! Are you on OpenAQ Slack? A little more about Chisato: Chisato Fukuda Calvert, Ph.D. is dedicated to strengthening the intersection of culture, community, and technology to fight climate change and create a healthier, more sustainable and equitable world. She has over a decade of professional experience working in international development, non-profit, and community engagement sectors to catalyze social impact in underserved communities across the globe. Her personal and professional commitment has been to help build and deepen human relationships, to facilitate generative discussions, to apply research into solution-building, and to contribute as a thought leader. Prior to joining OpenAQ, Chisato worked with Impact Experience to help connect investors, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and community leaders across the U.S. She has also held positions at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a Princeton-in-Asia fellow, Trace Foundation, and National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI).
In addition to her work experience, she has conducted research extensively across Asia including in Mongolia, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Her doctoral dissertation fieldwork focused on health disparities caused by air pollution exposure in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Her dissertation research was funded by the National Science Foundation, Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, Fulbright Institute, among others. Chisato earned her Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and graduated from Bucknell University with a Cultural Anthropology Honors Degree.
